December 13, 2007

Hello Friend,

Over the past year I have been working with the idea of using the things people do every day to conquer hunger, disease, and poverty.  I played around with a couple website ideas but what I was coming up with was truly too large and too expensive for one person to undertake.

While developing a shopping site for a friend, I began paying attention to price comparison shopping engines and found that they can be the most profitable sites on the internet.  However, the market was quite saturated.

Things began to fall into place.  On November 26, 2007 I began working on this site.  I was disappointed that the ideas came too late and I would not be able to capitalize on the Christmas shopping boom.  I stayed up nearly every night and often worked 10-12 straight hours when available.  At times I worked with total confidence of its future success and at times I fought to keep motivated out of fear of failure.  Some times I dreamed too big and sometimes too small.

Now, only a few weeks later, I am one day away from fully launching the site and I couldn't be more excited.  I don't believe that this one site has the potential to end world hunger.  I wish it did.  But I do believe that hunger can end and diseases can be cured.

I am not and will not ask for donations.  I am not asking you to do anything more than you are already doing.  All I'm asking is that if you plan to make a purchase on the web, please first come to ShopGiving.com.  I will be continually finding new merchants and I promise that ShopGiving.com will become the premier shopping comparison site on the internet.  You will find the lowest price from the most respected merchants, and I will then pass any commission from that sale on to the charity that you choose from our list.

ABOUT THE CHARITIES

I settled on 19 charities for the site launch, with the site itself listed to cover some of the administrative and startup costs.  I selected each charity based on their reputation and reviews from non-profit review boards.  This was absolutely the most daunting task.  I wish it could have been 100 but time and space are limiting the site to these 20.  I will be broadening the selection after the start of the year.  If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

ABOUT AFFILIATE MARKETING

Every time you make a purchase by following a link on ShopGiving.com, the merchant site will pay ShopGiving.com a percentage of the sale, usually between 4-15%.  This is not unique to this site.  All over the internet when you make a purchase by following a link from a site, that site is making a profit from your purchase.  We are simply redirecting some of the affiliate profits to reputable charities.

On every product page on ShopGiving.com you will see a column labeled gift.  This is an approximate value.  The average affiliate commission on a purchase is four percent.

OK, YES IT'S BUGGY

I've already stated this, but it's worth repeating.  I built this site in a short amount of time.  Therefore, there will be several bugs and speed issues that may pop up.  I apologize in advance.  This has been a one person operation.  Please trust that I am watching the server logs and will eradicate any programming issue I see pop up.  If you see any problems or errors and would like to share it with me, please let me know through the contact option in the top menu.

THE FUTURE

I have begun taking notes for the first revision of ShopGiving.com.  I would like to easily incorporate an unlimited number of charitable organizations.  Also, I will be adding in a review system for merchants and products.

Additionally, I have some ideas for other websites and tools along the "things we do every day" theme.  I would like to develop tools in the areas of search and communication.

YOUR HELP

There is the obvious, I would love for everyone who visits this site to make a purchase somewhere, but there is more I hope you can offer.  If you  believe in the potential of this website please tell your friends, blog about it, talk about it, mention it on Myspace, anything to get the word out.  I would also love your feedback. If you have any concerns or questions, I'll be happy to entertain them.

In closing I would like to again say thank you and again ask for your help in promotion.  If this website is as successful as I believe it can be, I promise to keep building tools where the things we do every day help toward ending hunger and disease.

Yours,
Rick
